Travel to Brazil
By Plane
São Paulo International Airport (GRU Airport)
Most international delegates will arrive at GRU Airport, located less than 200km from Campinas City in São Paulo. From GRU Airport you can take the Lira bus to Campinas bus station (Terminal Rodoviário de Campinas). This takes approximately 2 hours. From Campinas bus station you can take a taxi or a bus to Unicamp. You will need to take the 3.31 bus line (Rodoviária – Terminal Barão Geraldo), and then, from the terminal, take 3.36 or 3.29 bus lines to Unicamp. Check for current local bus prices.
Please find a step by step guide of how to reach Campinas from GRU.
Here are also some helpful tips from our Editor Amy Zanne regarding the bus from GRU to Campinas:
- You'll have to show an ID.
- You get assigned a seat. They usually circle what it is. You need to make sure you sit in your assigned seat. I didn't know this first time I went.
- You can put luggage below.
- There are 2 stops in Campinas. The first is Largo do Para and the second is the main bus station. I always get out at the first stop as it's less hectic. The main bus station is kind of crazy and will be hard to figure out which is your uber. You can tell the bus driver Largo do Para for getting out and luggage. You can track this on google maps if you have data.
- Once at Largo do Para, it's a short walk to the taxi stand to get a taxi for Unicamp. I've always done this but ask first if they take credit cards. Otherwise I'm sure you can call an Uber.
The majority of Brazilian delegates flying to the symposium will arrive at Viracopos Airport, located less than 40km from Unicamp. International delegates also have the option of flying to Rio de Janeiro International Airport (Tom Jobin/Galeão) and getting a connection to Viracopos Airport. From Viracopos Airport delegates have the option of taking a taxi straight to Unicamp or taking the Lira bus to Campinas bus station (Terminal Rodoviário de Campinas), which takes approximately 25 minutes. From Campinas bus station you can take a taxi or a bus to Unicamp as described above.
By Bus
Campinas bus station (Terminal Rodoviário de Campinas) has connections to locations across the Southeast, South and Midwest of Brazil. More information, including the bus companies that run each route and the bus schedules, is available on the bus station website.
Visas and entry requirements
Please check with the Brazilian consulate in your area to confirm the entry requirements you need to meet in order to enter Brazil. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also has information on visa requirements.
If you require a letter of invitation for a visa, the New Phytologist Foundation, together with our local organisers, will provide a letter of invitation upon request. To be eligible, you must first register and pay to attend the Symposium. Once you have registered, please contact the Events and Promotions Manager to request a visa invitation letter.
Due to the fact that an application for a visa can be a lengthy process, the New Phytologist Foundation recommends that you start your visa application process early: 90 to 120 days prior to the conference. We would also like to note that in issuing you with a letter of invitation, it is not a commitment from the Symposium or the organisers to provide any financial support, and you will still need to apply for a visa.
Even if you are travelling from a visa-exempt country, please be prepared to provide evidence to the Brazilian immigration authorities that you have the means to support yourself for the duration of your stay in Brazil (e.g. payslips, Institution funding documents etc.).
Vaccinations
Please arrange an appointment with your health professional at least four to six weeks before travel in order to asses any health risks associated with your travel. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for most visitors to the São Paulo region, but a yellow fever vaccination certificate is not currently required for entry to Brazil. This may be subject to change and we recommend you check the latest advice for your region before commencing travel. All visitors to Brazil are recommended to take precautions to avoid insect bites.
All delegates should ensure that they have adequate health insurance for their stay.
Travel guidance
We recommend that you carefully consult your government's travel guidance before travelling to Brazil, which should provide advice for travellers on logistics and safety. For example, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice or the US Department of State travel advice.
All delegates are strongly encouraged to take out appropriate travel insurance.
