Session Themes

The 45th New Phytologist symposium will take place over four days (Wednesday 26 – Saturday 29 June 2024) at the University of Campinas, Brazil. The symposium will be organised into sessions by research topics and there will be dedicated time for breakout sessions, poster sessions, selected poster talks and a field trip. A pre-symposium workshop will be held from Monday 24 June 2024. The organising committee encourages abstracts along the session themes, and will select speakers from submitted abstracts

  • The deadline for oral presentations was 1 March 2024 (now closed)
  • The deadline for a poster presentations was 1 April 2024 (now closed)

Late poster abstract submissions from registered attendees may be considered on a case by case basis.  Please email the Events and Promotions Manager for further details.

Symposium timings

The Symposium will start on Wednesday morning  and will conclude with a field trip on Saturday, with delegates returning to Campinas late afternoon/early evening (time not confirmed).

Non local delegates are strongly encouraged to arrange their travel to arrive in Campinas by the evening of Tuesday 25 June, and depart on the morning of Sunday 30 June.

The pre-symposium workshop will start on Monday morning and will conclude on Tuesday late afternoon. Non local delegates are strongly encouraged to arrive in Campinas by Sunday 23 June.

Scope

As human activities increasingly alter the distribution and relative dominance of plant and soil fungal communities through introductions and management, it is becoming critical to understand the consequences of these changes for biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Although some case studies demonstrate that introduced plants and fungi bring highly novel traits into ecosystems, relatively little is known about the broad biogeographic patterns, ecological/evolutionary dynamics, and ecosystem/biogeochemical consequences of such introductions. We are aware of numerous individual projects on major plant–fungal co-invasions, and a recent paper (‘The emerging science of linked plant–fungal invasions’ by Dickie et al., New Phytol., 215:1314–1332) made important contributions to a conceptual framework. This international symposium will build on this foundation, allowing a synthesis of results to date by identifying common themes/goals, developing collaborations across native/introduced ranges, and leveraging a global network to identify questions of large geographic scope.

Pre-symposium workshop

A two-day pre-symposium workshop on “Metabarcoding and Metagenomics, powerful tools to explore the ecological dimension of biological invasions” will be held on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 June 2024.

Rather than focus on the mechanics of bioinformatics, this workshop will focus on how to analyze next-generation sequencing data for answering questions in ecology, especially in the context of community assembly and biological invasions.

Applications to join the workshop are now open, along with further details.

The workshop is open to individuals not attending the symposium and there will be no charge to attend. However, attendees will need to fund their own travel, food, and accommodation. Places are limited, and interested attendees should complete a short application form.

Keynote speaker

Ian Dickie
Keynote Speaker
University of Canterbury

Ian A. Dickie is a professor of microbial ecology at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury in Christchurch, NZ. After doing reforestation work with the US Peace Corps in Panama, Ian undertook his doctoral degree in Ecology at Pennsylvania State University (State College, PA, USA), focussing on the role of soil biota in oak forest regeneration with Kim Steiner and Roger Koide. Ian had two post-doctoral research positions, the first with Roger Koide looking at vertical niche partitioning by ectomycorrhizal fungi (Dickie et al., 2002) and then a longer period with Peter Reich and Sarah Hobbie at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN, USA), researching mycorrhizal fungi in oak savanna. Ian has previously held professional positions at Manaaki Whenua | Landcare Research in Lincoln, New Zealand, and as a professor at Lincoln Universities BioProtection Research Centre. His research team investigates the role of fungi in ecosystems, with a particular focus on plant invasions. Ian has been an Editor of New Phytologist since 2012.

Poster competition

At the symposium, posters will be peer-judged by delegates, and a voting form will be issued to delegates. When assessing posters, we ask delegates to consider the quality of the information displayed and if the research is novel and significant.
